Santa supports Hafod protesters

Santa Claus paid a visit to Hafod Quarry today to support the festive protesters at the gate.

Local campaigners against the landfill are there every day keeping an eye on what's going on - just as well as the authorities don't seem to be able to keep a check on the place. Here's a report from one of the protesters:

At 6:55am this morning a tanker lorry drew up to the landfill gates and the driver then jumped out of the cab opened the gates and drove in and closed the gates behind him. When Garry (site supervisor) came down to open the gates soon after 7:00am I asked him why the driver had opened the gate and entered before 7:00am. Garry shrugged his shoulders and when I pushed him for an answer he said “it was 7 O Clock”. I informed him that I had a photograph time stamped at 6:58am of the driver going through the gates but he declined to comment. Shortly after this conversation Garry came out of the site and asked to speak to me. He informed me that the driver was Polish and his boss had been informed and as a result the driver had been “banned from the site”.

We would've thought that it was the responsibility of the quarry operators, MWH, to ensure that no vehicles enter the site before 7am, but why take the flak when you've got a Polish driver to blame? And why was the driver's nationality even mentioned by the supervisor? It's hardly relevant to the story.

Two quick points -

1. Either / Or? Don't you mean BOTH! The Hafod 'supervisor'(* see notes below) tells Rob Alan lies and he tells us lies - it's the MWH way of doing things!

2. So what if the driver was Polish, it wouldn't matter if he'd been a scouser - they're both as thick and difficult to understand!

* Definition of a MWH Supervisor: A young man named Gary rewarded for working a seventy hour week starting each day before it gets light and going home after its gone dark with just an extra £5 in his pay packet and a very flashy, distinctive Orange safety jacket (do they do those in EXTRA large!) Perhaps he does it for other reasons - could it be he enjoys working amongst all that rubbish or is his wife no longer as beautiful as his bride? Come on Gary - it's Sunday and assuming you are not on site doing your 'coursework' you should have a minute to respond!

Why are we wasting our time arguing with these idiots from MWH. Do as I am going to do, wait a year until this has all gone quiet then slowly do something nasty to each and everyone of them and their families, like they are doing to us with this landfill. A list of all who are connected is being populated. See you soon enough sad scousers. Revenge is a dish best served cold.......

Hi all,

Judging by his posts it seems the JonDoe has a fascination with the protestors,he does make for a sad apologist though. He just seems to be another little soldier in the service of his capitalists masters, another bore going out of his way to defend the conditions that are detrimental to his own well being.
A bit like the famous ex planning officer who came on here clutching his book of rules and explaining to us in tones of attempted authority that accordinng to the golden rules, no rules had been broken. His ability to interpret the world seemed to stop at the "keep of the grass " sign.

Hafod is an example of democracy in action.
The local paper saw it as an opportunity to sell some papers, the local politicians saw it as an opportunity to grab some votes, but in the end the lorries are still dumping their shit.
There are important lessons here.Perhaps the most important one being a realisation of the fallacious and deceptive nature of democracy.
But more importantly we must realise the need for a new political movement that isn't structured to represent arms dealers and supermarket giants.
None of the existing political parties are willing to look into alternative structures of representation.Only the people can do that.

I don’t think I have ever read such nonsense from both sides of this latest argument!

To put the record straight we who protest at the gate do so PEACEFULLY save for a couple of horns and a dozen whistles! We will certainly never resort to the nonsense of Anon (20.12.06, 6:06:00 PM) – Personally, and thankfully we would not know where to start to have somebody shot for £50, is there an Argos catalogue number for such a service? Grow up!

We might not quite be ready to follow the lead of the soldiers of the first world war and have a game of football with the MWH drivers before enjoying a mince pie and a rendition of Silent Night but we’re not sure we’d want them, their entire families and two thirds of Liverpool shot dead three days before Christmas either!

The ‘watcherandthetower’ then makes a very interesting point about ‘the local politicians saw it as an opportunity to grab some votes’ – well that’s pretty much back fired then hasn’t it because I doubt there will be an orderly queue of voters desperate to re-elect Cllr. Bitthel, Karen Sinclair AM or the Rt Hon Martyn Jones MP – the latter might escape given even a Buffoon sporting a labour rosette would stand a good chance of being elected as MP for Clwyd South (well its happened before!)

The bottom line remains – this injustice will be stopped, legal common sense will prevail and MWH and the whole of Merseyside will have to find somewhere else to dump their rubbish –Goodison Park perhaps, after all they’re used to putting rubbish on that field! (That’ll start a lively debate- c’mon the reds!)

PS Just for the record Jondoe – friends is spelt friends, not freinds. Perhaps a dictionary could be added to your Christmas list even at this late stage. If you think you’re staying for the next forty years perhaps a Welsh / English one might be a good idea – just a thought! Happy Christmas and a PEACEFUL New Year!

Hi anon,

I agree with you that it is a little radical to shoot anybody associated with MW,but I think you missed the point I was making.
The political system has let down the protest.
It would be nice to think that Martyn Jones,Karen Sinclair and Bithell will be out come the next elections, but in reality their continued ride on the gravy train is pretty well assured. And let's face it if we get rid of them, they will be replaced by a crowd who are just as bad because this political system encourages a politically ignorant electorate to vote in these tossers in the first place.

It is normal for LGVs to use the A483 when it is closed to traffic when a large load is leaving Air Products.
What is this 40 years? Hafod will be filled capped and giving us electricity long before then. Altami should be getting full by then too. Don't panic yet. We still have Borras to look after our waste of the future. Not long left at Pen-Y-Bont though so get ready for the white wagons entering Hafod .
Watcher. Why don't you emergrate to a country that has a system of government you are happy with? Your arguements against Hafod are as yet unsupported by facts re: planning. It seems that there is something deeper frustrating you. Perhaps an unhappy childhood or a sexual fixation with your mother? Maybe a closet homosexual who is afraid of coming out of the closet?

Dear Watcher,

You seem to have taken a bit of stick from the MWH contributors tonight - I'm sure you’re going to "emergrate" (I think they probably mean emigrate) soon to some third world undemocratic outpost - like, erm ... North Wales!

Anyway moving on, I don’t think it’s a fait accompli that Cllr Bitthel, Karen Sinclair & Martyn Jones will all be re-elected. For the reasons given previously I think Martyn Jones will be harder to shift but there is a real chance of the other two being ousted.

Cllr. Bitthel received only 492 votes at the time of his election and has hardly covered himself in glory over Hafod, the only and most serious issue that really affects our village. For example on Monday he drove past the protesters without so much as a wave, a toot of his horn or even eye contact! That alone cost him nine of the votes he had last time! Perhaps if a local village councillor with less than 500 votes delivers a new train station and a direct rail link to London he might just be forgiven; on the other hand the more astute voting public might just conclude that such a major strategic transport decision has been made somewhat further away from Johnstown than Eyton!

We’ve all heard about Karen Sinclair’s big file but she has done precious little other than write lots of letters – she didn’t even accompany the Minister on his visit to the Hafod Site in the heart of her constituency. Given the increasing number of versions of the visit there is still plenty of time for her to be present yet! Perhaps she was driving the train that dropped him off before his driver got lost coming down Bangor Road before waving at the Security that failed to notice him entering the site! You couldn’t make it up! Well actually they have!

Happy “emergrating”!

No offence is intended to any of the politicians who represent Johnstown - I am sure Cllr. Bitthel, Karen Sinclair AM & Martyn Jones MP commit much of their time and effort to their respective roles, it’s just a shame that these efforts have not really impacted on Hafod Landfill. The public perception of what they have achieved is profoundly negative but with months and in some cases years to go before the next election there is still time to actively support the campaign. EFFORT will be REWARDED with votes, APATHY with certain electoral DEFEAT!

Maybe I've missed something here, but there's a big difference between Karen Sinclair's pathetic efforts over Hafod and Dave Bithell's consistent support for our campaign. Martyn Jones, of course, is too busy adjusting his dicky bo.

All,

I have accepted fully the inappropriateness of my actions at the start of the protest, apologised to the Police for them and accepted a caution that will remain on my record restricting some things I may have wished to do in the future. Additionally I have made a donation to RoSPA but I cannot turn back the clock. It would be nice never to have made a mistake in life but sadly for most of us absolute perfection is not an option.

In relation to my postings on the blog I have never used offensive language or posted a single comment that has not been 100% true. I accept that you may not always (or ever!) agree with what is posted by me or others; indeed there would be little point in a blog or any other form of debate if everyone was in full agreement all of the time.

I suspect that you have attributed some of the recent postings to me when they have been submitted by others but that's the deal with a blog site. (I was asleep when some were posted – I know Hafod is a nightmare but blogging in your sleep is taking things too far!) I am genuinely sorry if I have offended Cllr Bitthel, his supporters or anybody else for that matter

Hafod Landfill will sadly still be there in two weeks, Christmas will not so I'm off to enjoy it with the kids – no more protesting, no more blogs (reading or responding) So sorry fellow protesters, the bacon rolls will have to be a New Year treat (Quite what I am going to do with the thirty fresh bread rolls and sixty rashers of back bacon I don’t know!)

Best wishes for a Happy Christmas!

I'm glad the issue is going on in Europe, like the Leader said, and hopefully the place will soon shut. I don't see why Dave Bithell is being seen as like Karen Sinclair though, his words do match his deeds after all. He is much better than the councillor we had before and has really been good in my eyes as he helped when asked, straight away.
This site is good and I am thinking much more now about rubbish and how I have changed even since last Christmas with all the packaging and stuff. I just think too many people on here are out for themselves and trying to score points instead of getting the place closed. Some of the workers for the company can be very rude and that just makes them look worse.
Lets hope this christmas is the last one for Hafod, merry christmas to all the protesters, well done and thankyou.

It is time there was some common sense injected into this ongoing dispute.
First it should be acknowledged that it was the Lib/Lab Alliance on Wrexham County Council that requested the extreme police presence back in September at the Guildhall protest.
It is also a fact that this bunch of quislings are rattled because the protest shows no sign of waning hence the illegal arrests that have been perpetrated by the police at their request.
You question why? Well it is a fact that Wrexham council regardless of its political make up has been controlled by Freemasonery for decades and the police force are willing servants as the same applies to them. In fact they are all working in conjunction with each other.
In conclusion, the Hafod group have made very powerful enemies and unless the people of the Wrexham area wake up from their complacency and support them we will witness even more arrests and the landfill policy will grow and will be on "YOUR" doorstep next!
So stand up and be counted instead of capitulating to the will of the Guildhall bullies.

Where is the speed limit being broken?
EU law means every LGV over 7.5 tonnes is fitted with a speed limiter. 85 kph (53 mph)is the max speed they are set at which is checked every two years. That means MWH drivers could be 3 mph over the legal limit on the A483.
To get up to 40 mph after exiting the A483 at 44 tonnes and make the corner before the landfill entrance is about as likely as Hafod closing before it is full.
Stop talking crap.

The seat belt and mobile phone offences were observed from the slip road into the site entrance but you were not present so it was a case of see no evil speak no evil only a tissue of lies as far as you are concerned.

There is an alternative to land fill but the Lib/Lab pact on Liverpool and Wrexham councils are too thick and bone idle to implement such a policy, they are only interested in furthering their own ends.

hi all,

"work shy scroungers"..

I can't recall anybody mentioning the Queen or the rest of the royal family here!!.

John in his wisdom also said
"I work hard and get fair pay for what I do. Capitalism is human nature and that will never change".

So I take it that JD is a little confused, whilst he subscribes to the notion that capitalism is akin to human nature he also admits to glorying in being a wage slave..in this system you can actually only be one or the other.

And what of this notion that "capitalism" is natural. What has happened in John's little tick tock brain is that he hasn't quite got round to realising that the capitalists have been taking the piss out of him since he was born, and will continue to take the piss out of him till the day he kicks the bucket.
All thats happened here is that the capitalists have convinced John Doe(and almost every other bugger) that capitalism is "natural" when in fact it is probably the most unnatural thing ever invented.
Sit down and think about it Johnny. If you had the power to design from scratch a new civilisation would you choose capitalism?.I doubt it unless of course you were going to be the capitalist.
So Capitalism would be natural for you but not for the wage slaves that have to work to make it all happen.
Just think it through.
Then think what a total utter buffoon you are for coming on here and making such an idiotic display of yourself by spouting an idiotic backward pile of tripe about capitalism being "natural".
You are the real victim here mate, because most of the time the capitalsit treats the wage slaves with contempt, they hold a special contempt for those that grovel to them.
So you just can't win.The protestors think you are a tosser and your masters think you are an even bigger tosser.

Watcher, you should not presume things when you read my comments.
Where do I say that I am a wage slave?
How did you earn your living watcher? Wage slave or capitalist?
As a socialist you must have been part of a co-operative. But there must have been somebody at the top? Did he get more money for being the face of the company and did he work hard and pull strings to get there? Is that not capitalism?
When a pack of wolves are found in the wild or herd of elephants there is always a senior leader. Top dog who has clawed to the top. That is why I say it is human nature. Because capitalism is human nature socialism will never work.
I am not saying capitalism is better at all. But you either have to fight a battle that can never be won or look after number 1.
As for the alternative to landfill at least part of the waste we create, recycling is proven to be too expensive and is costing more all the time because there is little market for the stuff saved.
To the name calling I just chuckle.

I fail to understand the need for the personal abuse that is being used by various people on this site.
There is only one issue and that is whether landfill is a civilised method of dealing with the refuse that industry and consumers produce.
It is an established fact that it is a wasteful method of disposal and the blame can most certainly be directed at the politicians who are nothing more than self seekers and have no interest in the well being of the people they are there to represent.
So Jondoe and others, just stand back and think how we can all collectively force the issue on these useless people and bring about a situation whereby refuse is dealt with in a proper manner which would result in a cleaner environment for us all.
This would also include the workers who have to work in the waste industry in the most shocking conditions, people who Jondoe is forever defending and yet not putting forward a constructive case to improve their working conditions.

Well said, Y Ddraig Goch. Reading this blog over Xmas has been hard going - far too much personal abuse and not enough focus on why we're opposing landfill at Hafod.
Jon Doe's idea of capitalism as "human nature" is quite laughable if he thinks that we must follow the law of the jungle. If that was the case, we'd abandon the sick, elderly and disabled. Human nature is a long way away from the law of the jungle - I'm not sure capitalism is.
Capitalism only gets a mention here because its over-riding purpose is to create profit, no matter what the long-term or short-term cost. That means the interests of the majority and of whole communities can be ignored, as is happening in Hafod at the moment.
If the market price for recycling isn't high enough, that tells us a lot about how bad the market is in reflecting the real value and worth of things.
Councils and companies are allowed to pay lip service to the concept of recycle-reuse-reclaim because their selfish interests come before the interests of the environment and the health of communities.
Jon Doe's short-term interest in a weekly wage is understandable but there's far more work to be had in proper recycling and re-using than landfilling the problem away for future generations.

At Tuesday, January 02, 2007 8:02:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hi Hafod,
Like I said before, I agree with your opinions on recycling but the government should be looking at it from another angle. If industry was rewarded for using recycled materials then it would make them more attractive to source. The trouble is while they make out landfill tax is charged to reduce landfill it simply a way to make money for them.
I am sorry to tell you that with over 4000 loads already tipped you are fighting a battle that is already lost.
Mr annon who thinks he can bully everybody. I sleep just fine thanks but remember when your name comes to light and your pc is taken by the police as evidence all your comments will be there to find.
